Locust control measures using zinc sheeting and digging pits, 1915. In 1915, swarms of locusts stripped areas in Palestine and Syria of almost all vegetation over a period of several months. The infestation seriously compromised food supplies and increased food prices and hardship in the region. Various methods were employed to attempt to control the plague, including zinc enclosures, collecting locust eggs, digging pits, and burning with flame-throwers. | |
