Light micrograph (LM) of Tetracycline (antibiotic) crystals. Tetracycline is an antibiotic produced by the Streptomyces group (actinomycete bacteria) and is used against many bacterial infections. It is also used to produce several semi-synthetic derivatives, which are known as the Tetracyclines. Tetracycline inhibits cell growth by inhibiting protein translation. Cells become resistant to tetracycline by at least two mechanisms: efflux and ribosomal protection. Magnification: x40 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres. | |
