Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Gambierdiscus toxicus is marine, armoured, benthic dinoflagellate from the family Goniodomataceae. It is a toxic species that produces a toxin called ciguatoxin that accumulates in the flesh of fish. When humans eat the contaminated fish it can cause a severe illness called ciguatera fish poisoning (or ciguatera). People may experience nausea, vomiting, and neurologic symptoms such as tingling fingers or toes. They also may find that cold things feel hot and hot things feel cold. Symptoms usually go away in days or weeks but can last for years. Ciguatera has no cure. Magnification: x220 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres. | |
