Static electricity experiment. 19th-century illustration of the use of a device known as Volta's Electrophore. Also known as an electrophorus, this device consists of a dielectric material and a metal plate with an insulating handle. Turning the handle generates static electricity by friction. A spark is seen here, when the user places his hand near the device. This illustration, part of a section titled 'Experiences de Physique sans Appareils' (illustrating popular physics experiments that don't require the use of laboratory equipment), is from 'Physique Populaire' (Emile Desbeaux, 1891). | |
