Mauve stinger jellyfish (Pelagia noctiluca). This jellyfish is found in the open ocean. The bowl-shaped bell and tentacles have clumps of stinging cells (nematocysts), used to subdue prey such as fish, crustaceans or plankton. The mauve stinger is bioluminescent, producing flashes of light when stimulated by turbulence. | |
