Diamond anvil cell. A crystal is placed under high pressure between two diamond tips in a diamond anvil cell (DAC). This is a high pressure device used in scientific experiments. It allows the application of extreme pressures to small pieces of material, to change the material's structure in fundamental ways. The device can replicate the pressures found deep in the earth's crust, where minerals such as rubies and emeralds are formed.
