Northern elephant seal bull (Mirounga angustirostris) on a beach. He is guarding his territory from other males. Another male is doing the same further along the beach. The male elephant seal is much larger than the female, and possesses an inflatable proboscis on his head. During the breeding season males fight for territories, which give them access to females. A dominant male may possess a harem numbering up to 40 females by the end of the season. Northern elephant seals are found in the North-East Pacific Ocean. They feed on fish and squid, often diving very deep in order to find their prey. Photographed in California,USA | |
