Harp seal. View of a mature female harp seal (Phoca groenlandica) next to a hole in the ice. The darker spots on the seal's skin develop at the onset of sexual maturity. Seals build holes in the ice to allow them to breathe without having to retreat every time to the edge of the ice sheet. These seals live on and around the ice packs of the Arctic. Their diet consists mainly of fish, shellfish and other sea creatures. Photographed in the Gulf of St. Lawrence,Canada | |
