Longlure frogfish (Antennarius multiocellatus) camouflaged amongst rocks on the seabed. This fish lies in wait for smaller fish, its main prey, before engulfing them when they near its mouth (centre left). It uses a lure (top left) on its forehead to attract prey. This is wiggled in a pattern to simulate a fish or shrimp. The cryptic colouration also helps it avoid its own predators. This fish almost never swims, instead running short distances across the seabed on limb-like pectoral fins (one seen at lower right) | |
