Argiope spider. Black and yellow argiope,or writing, spider (Argiope aurantia) on its web. The zigzag pattern on the web is characteristic of this genus. The web is spun to catch insects that fly or jump onto its sticky silk fibres. Once an insect is caught, the spider, alerted by its struggles, injects it with venom from its chelicerae (mouthparts). The venom not only paralyses the prey but begins the process of digestion. The spider then wraps its prey in silk, before sucking it dry. This spider is found throughout the USA and southern Canada | |
