Monarch butterfly pupa (Danaus plexippus) attached to a leaf. During pupation, the caterpillar changes into a butterfly. One of the butterfly's wings can be seen inside the protective chrysalis: the adult stage is ready to emerge. Monarchs are migratory butterflies native to North America. Millions of them migrate to the southern USA and Mexico for the winter. They spend this period in semi-hibernation,before mating in the spring and laying eggs from which the caterpillars hatch on their journey back north.
