CD-ROM disc with disc drive. Hand inserts a compact disc into the CD-ROM (acronym for Compact Disc Read-Only Memory) disc drive of a personal computer. CD-ROM is a very powerful storage medium for data. Data is stored in digital form as a pattern of pits on the aluminium-coated plastic disc. A laser scans the disc, the pits do not reflect the laser beam to a photodetector whereas the unpitted area does. A single CD-ROM disc may store about 600 Megabytes of data, equivalent to some 300,000 pages of text. They are finding increasing use in educational and technical database applications | |
