Nebulae in the constellation of Monoceros. The brightest star (S Monocerotis, upper left) lies just to the left of a reflection nebula (blue). Below and at right of these objects is an emission nebula (NGC 2264,red). A dark cone intruding into that emission nebula is the Cone Nebula. On the other side of the image,at lower right, there is a small triangular reflection nebula called Hubble's Variable Nebula. This is lit up by the star R Monocerotis. Nebulae are clouds of gas and dust in space, many light years across. They are called emission nebulae when the hydrogen gas is ionised, emitting red light. Reflection nebulae reflect light.
