Zika virus vaccine research. Healthy volunteer being injected with NIAID Zika virus investigational DNA vaccine as part of clinical trials to test the vaccine. This vaccine was developed in the USA at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Vaccine Research Center (VRC). This is the first administration of this vaccine in a human. The trial (which started in August 2016) will involve 80 healthy volunteers aged 18-35 years. The Zika virus causes zika fever. It is transmitted to humans via the bite of an infected mosquito. In 2015 a previously unknown connection between Zika infection in pregnant women and microcephaly (small head) in newborns was reported. Photographed on 2 August 2016 | |
