Yucatan Peninsula sinkhole. Swimmers in the Yaluts'il cenote,a limestone sinkhole on the Yucatan Peninsula,Mexico. These sinkholes, numerous in the area, were used by the Mayan culture as a place of worship, and are now a popular tourist attraction, especially for swimming and cave diving. This sinkhole is one of those that lie along the rim of the Chicxulub Crater, which has a higher density of cenotes than usual. This is evidence that a prehistoric oceanic basin formed around 66 million years ago following the asteroid impact that formed the Chicxulub Crater. Photographed in May 2016 | |
