Aedes aegypti mosquito on Olympic logo. Computer illustration of a female Aedes aegypti mosquito over South America, with the globe forming one of the rings of the Olympic Games logo. This species of mosquito is found throughout tropical Africa and parts of South America. The female feeds on human blood and is a vector for the transmission of yellow fever,Chikungunya,Dengue fever and zika viruses to humans. In 2015 a previously unknown connection between Zika infection in pregnant women and microcephaly (small head) in newborns was reported, originating in South America. This has led to concerns over the health of pregnant women travelling to Brazil for the 2016 Summer Olympics | |
