Mount Sharp,on Mars, obtained by NASA's Curiosity rover. This image has been adjusted to look approximately as it would on Earth to aid geologists in interpreting rock type. About 3 kilometres in front of the rover is a ridge containing lots of the iron oxide haematite. Beyond that is a plain rich in clay minerals, and beyond that hills rich in sulphate minerals. The changing minerals suggest changing environments on early Mars, but suggests that all involved exposure to water. Curiosity, part of the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission, landed in Gale Crater on 6 August 2012. Image obtained by Curiosity's Mastcam camera on 9 September 2015 | |
