Californian sea lion (Zalophus californianus) being photographed as it sleeps on a beach. This is a bull (male) sea lion. Bulls are much larger than females, and can reach 2.5 metres in length and 340 kilograms in weight. The Californian sea lion inhabits coastal regions of the eastern Pacific Ocean. It feeds mainly on fish and cephalopods (squid and octopus). It is a social animal, and comes ashore in large numbers. It seems to have a preference for man-made structures and in recent years it has caused problems by crowding onto jetties, piers and pontoons. Photographed in the Galapagos. The Galapagos population does not interact with the North American one | |
