Margay (Leopardus wiedii,or Felis wiedii) sitting on a branch. This cat is almost exclusively arboreal, and lives in the humid jungles and forests of Central America and northern South America. It is the best climber of all the cats, and can run up trees with no difficulty whatsoever. It also descends trees head down, which is unusual. It is a nocturnal hunter, and typically catches monkeys, birds and squirrels. Margays are acrobatic in nature, and make huge leaps from tree to tree, and can even walk upside down along a branch. They are small cats, measuring only around 50 centimetres from head to rump. Photographed in Belize |
