Black-footed penguins (Spheniscus demersus). One is using its beak to groom its feathers. Penguins are flightless birds whose have adapted to swim in the sea. Other names for this penguin include the African penguin and the jackass penguin (because of its braying donkey-like call). This penguin is found in breeding colonies on islands off Namibia and South Africa, and at a few places on the South African mainland. It spends much time at sea, feeding on fish, squid and crustaceans. It breeds and moults on land. It can reach a length of 50 centimetres. The pink patches over the eyes are blood-rich sweat glands that help cool the bird.
