Catfish. X-ray of the skeleton of a catfish, seen in side view. The spine is clearly visible running from the bony head to the double tail fin. Dorsal, ventral and pectoral fins have developed sharp mobile spines in this species,a protective device against predators. Catfish are bottom dwelling fish with a body either naked (free of scales) or armoured with bony plates. Typically, all catfish possess taste-sensitive barbs around the mouth (not visible on X-ray); this enables them to detect food at dusk and at night. Magnification: x0.6 at 35mm size. x5 at 8x12ins | |
