Spider's web. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of beads of gum on the adhesive silk thread of the web of a spider. The gum may slow the rate at which the adhesive dries and help to bring flying insects to a stop. Silk is produced from silk glands in the abdomen of the spider. Inside the glands the silk is in liquid- crystalline form, but as a thread of silk is squeezed out by the spinnerets the liquid hardens to the protein fibroin. Adhesive threads are mainly used in web construction. Other non- adhesive types of silk may be used to line burrows, wrap prey or as egg cocoons. Magnification unknown | |
