Spider's web. Coloured environmental scanning electron micrograph (ESEM) of beads of gum on the adhesive silk thread of the web of an unidentified spider. The gum may slow the rate at which the adhesive dries and help to bring flying insects to a stop. Unlike a conventional scanning electron microscope (SEM),samples placed into an environmental SEM do not need to be desiccated or coated in gold. Magnification unknown | |
