Hornet. Composite image of a high-speed photograph of a hornet (Vespa crabro) in flight near blackberries. The hornet is the largest member of the wasp family. It has a reputation as being aggressive, but will generally only sting when provoked. It is a social insect, living in a large hive made of hardened wood pulp. The nests are usually built in hollow trees or similar cavities. During the spring and summer, the hornets help to raise the young. In the autumn, when the young have matured, the hornets leave the nest and feed on fruits until they are killed by the cold of winter. The hornet can reach a length of up to 35 millimetres | |
