Robert Hooke's drawing of a "blue fly" published in Micrographia,1665. Hooke (1635-1703) was curator of experiments at the Royal Society of London, which had been founded in 1660. Using a compound microscope to observe a wide range of specimens,he then drew & published the results of his remarkably detailed observations.
