Carpet beetle larval hairs. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the hairs of a carpet beetle (family Dermestidae). Carpet beetle larvae are found in the dirtier areas of homes. Their hairs can cause irritation when they come into contact with skin or are inhaled. Because of their hairy appearance, they are often known as 'woolly bears'. They are a significant pest, feeding on animal materials including fur, feathers, hair, leather and other fabrics, and stored food products. The larvae can survive for two to three years indoors, before hatching into free-living adult beetles. Magnification: x130 when printed 10 centimetres wide | |
