Stentor protozoan. Light micrograph of Stentor coeruleus,a free-living protozoan which can also anchor itself to a point using its tapering foot (not seen here). S. coeruleus has tiny,hair- like structures (cilia) projecting from the feeding rim or buccal membrane (in the upper frame). This cone-shaped,translucent creature feeds by rapidly beating the cilia to capture food particles such as bacteria, diatoms and rotifers. S. coeruleus is seen here in the extended, feeding position; when disturbed it shrinks to protect itself. S. coeruleus belongs to the subclass Spirotrichia. Magnification: x 200 at 35 mm size | |
