Von Guericke's sunspot theory. Close-up of the centre of a diagram of the solar system, published in Experimenta Nova (1672) by the German scientist and inventor Otto von Guericke (1602-1686). The Sun is at centre, surrounded by two sunspots and the planets Mercury,Venus and Earth. The sunspots are labelled "Maculae Solis". Galileo had earlier correctly stated that sunspots were on the Sun's surface, but this alternate theory was still popular. A moon is shown orbiting Venus (a theory later discredited),with the Moon orbiting the Earth. The labels are in Latin. For the full diagram, see V700/357 | |
