Electrolysis cells being prepared for experiments in 'cold fusion'. First announced by Pons and Fleischmann in 1989,cold fusion caused a storm in the science world. The process involves the electrolysis of heavy (deuterated) water in a cell with a platinum anode and palladium cathode. The deuterium ions are driven into the lattice of the palladium, allegedly causing nuclear fusion and the release of considerable energy. Photographed in 1993 at IMRA (Minoru Institute of Advanced Research) in southern France, where Fleischmann and Pons now work and are claiming 100 times more energy release than in their 1989 experiments | |
