Supernova remnant E0102 and N 76. The supernova remnant is the blue object at lower centre. The emission nebula N 76 (pink),also known as Henize 1956,is partially seen at upper right. E0102 is around 50 light years from the edge of the nebula, and is only about 2000 years old. The gas and dust of both the supernova remnant and the nebula glow as they are heated by nearby stars (for the nebula) and by the speed of their expansion (for the supernova remnant). These objects are in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC),around 210,000 light years from Earth in the constellation Tucana. The image was obtained by combining infrared and visible observations from the ACS and WPFC 2 instruments, from 1995 and 2003 | |
