Planetary nebula NGC 40,combined optical and Chandra X-ray telescope image. The red regions are the optical part of the nebula, and comprise gases ejected from the central star (centre) and heated by its radiation. The X-ray emission (blue) is due to a shell of gas that has been compressed and heated to millions of degrees by the extremely fast stellar wind from the star. This planetary nebula lies around 3000 light years from Earth in the constellation Cepheus | |
