Betelgeuse is a massive,variable star,which lies about 650 light years from Earth in the constellation of Orion. It has one of the largest diameters known & is 17,000 times brighter than the Sun. It has a turbulent,convective atmosphere,a strong stellar wind,& a variable diameter. It will probably end its life in a supernova explosion. Its name is a contraction of an Arabic phrase meaning "armpit of the central one",referring to the armpit of Orion
