Scorpius constellation. Scorpius, the scorpion,is a zodiacal constellation crossed by the Milky Way. It is best seen in summer in the northern hemisphere. The brightest star in Scorpius is the red supergiant Antares (Alpha Scorpii, just right of centre),the 16th brightest star in the night sky. The star marks the heart of the scorpion, with its head being formed by the column of three bright stars at centre right. The tail extends downwards from Antares before curling up to form the sting at lower left. The scorpion has no claws; these became the neighbouring constellation Libra. The bright Milky Way is obscured by dark dust clouds at left | |
