Our galaxy,the Milky Way,passes through this area and is extremely rich in star clusters,dark and bright nebulae. Alpha Centauri (at bottom left) is the third-brightest visible star. The crucifix-shaped Southern Cross is defined by four bright stars. The pink Eta Carinae Nebula (NGC 3372,at right) is a gas cloud lit by the young stars within it & is character- ised by its dark dust lanes. The dark round area at lower centre is the Coal Sack Nebula. It is a cloud of interstellar gas which absorbs the radiation emitted by the stars in this area | |
