Jupiter and its four Galilean moons,as seen through a small telescope. Jupiter's four largest moons,Io,Europa,Ganymede and Callisto, were discovered by the Italian astronomer Galileo in 1610,using one of the first telescopes. Galileo observed the motions of the four moons as they orbited Jupiter and was able to measure their orbital periods. This photograph was taken on 8 September 1990; photos R370/067 and R370/069 show the positions of the moons on 7 September and 11 September respectively | |
