Face on Mars mesa, oblique view. This eroded land formation is 1.5 kilometres across, and is located in the Cydonia region of Mars. The land formation got its name when an image of the feature was first taken by the Viking 1 spacecraft in 1976,as it appeared remarkably like a human head. The Cydonia region belongs to the transition zone between the southern highlands and the northern plains and may have been a coastal zone if,as is thought, the northern plains were once ocean beds. The image was taken by the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on board ESA's Mars Express spacecraft and published on 21st September 2006. The ground resolution is approximately 13.7 meters per pixel | |
