Nasmyth telescope. Historical artwork of the 20 inch reflecting telescope developed by James Nasmyth (1808-1890),a Scottish engineer and inventor. It was a combination of Newton and Cassegrain designs with a concave primary and a convex secondary mirror (like in the Cassegrain) and a tilted flat mirror (like in the Newton) to redirect the image outside the side of the telescope at the pivot. Nasmyth placed a seat at the right height for the eye-piece,and the whole contraption on a turn-table,so the observer would never have to move from his seat.
