Uterus (mid-secretory stage). Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through the endometrial wall of the human uterus at the mid- secretory stage of the menstrual cycle. At top is the ciliated surface (blue) of the mucosa (brown),with a U-shaped uterine gland at lower centre. Below the mucosa is stroma (green). The mucosa builds up (proliferation) in the first 14 days of the cycle to prepare for pregnancy,an egg is released, and then the lining becomes secretory to nourish the embryo. Here,in mid-secretory stage about day 22,large secretory cells are seen (top left, green),and the well-developed gland reveals secretions. Magnification x430 at 5x7cm size. x1,500 at 8x10ins | |
