Benign prostatic hyperplasia. Illustration of a prostate gland exhibiting nodular hyperplasia,or cell proliferation. The nodules (cream swirls) are due to the excess growth of normal cells within the gland. The lower part of the bladder can be seen above the prostate, while the bottom section of the penis lies below the gland. Prostate enlargement tends to obstruct the urethra, the tube running through the centre of the prostate down to the penis, resulting in urine retention. This condition usually occurs in men over 50. Treatment of more severe cases involves surgical removal of the prostate gland | |
