Uterine cancer. X-ray of a woman's uterus (white, upper centre),showing the extent (black arrows) of an adenocarcinoma,a cancer of the endometrium or uterine lining. This malignant tumour is most common in women between 50-70 years old. It causes vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain and difficulty urinating. It develops slowly and can often be treated by removing the uterus and nearby organs. If the cancer has spread, radiotherapy and chemotherapy may also be used. Taking a synthetic form of the female sex hormone progesterone may also prevent the growth of secondary tumours. A contrast medium injected through the cervix (lower centre) reveals the position of the uterus | |
