Heroin addiction. Equipment used by a heroin addict, including a hypodermic syringe used to inject the drug. Heroin (diacetyl morphine) is a white powder (at lower right). In order to be injected it is dissolved in water in a receptacle such as a spoon, and then drawn into the syringe. The drug is injected intravenously. Heroin is an opiate analgesic drug which induces stupor and narcotic sleep states. Its danger is that it causes dependence and tolerance. Tolerance leads to ever-increasing doses being taken, frequently resulting in a fatal overdose. Giving up the habit is difficult,as severe withdrawal symptoms are common | |
