Broken leg. X-ray showing multiple fractures (centre left) to the lower leg. Both the tibia (the thicker bone, foreground) and the fibula have been broken. Fractures are usually caused by a severe force, such as a fall or a car accident. In most cases a fracture is repaired by a surgical operation performed under anaesthesia. The bone ends are realigned and immobilized, sometimes with metal pins or plates,to allow the broken pieces to reunite firmly. In an adult a weight-bearing bone such as the tibia may take up to six months to knit together completely. Also seen in the image are the bones of the foot at bottom centre | |
