Psoriasis. Illustration of inflamed red lesions on a woman's back and arms due to the skin disease psoriasis. This is a chronic skin disorder that affects about 1% of the UK population. Lesions are typically thickened red patches covered with dry silvery scales of skin. They are caused by a ten- fold increase in the rate of new skin cell production. Why this occurs is not known, although a genetic factor may be involved as the disease is partly inherited. Onset is usually between age 10 and 25,and it recurs thereafter to a varying extent, sometimes related to stress. Treatment includes corticosteroid drugs and ointments containing coal tar derivatives | |
