Lichenification caused by eczema. View of patches of thickened,hardened skin on the back of a 75 year old man's neck. This is known as lichenification. It is caused by excessive scratching,here due to the intense itching sensation produced by eczema. Eczema is an inflammation of the skin,accompanied by itching,scaling or blisters. Usually the cause is unknown,but occasionally it is an allergic reaction. Eczema can be treated by applying a soothing cream to the area,and then dressing the rash to prevent scratching. As well as lichenification,scratching can lead to broken skin and infection
