Cerebral aneurysm. Coloured computed tomography brain scan showing an aneurysm (yellow) of the cerebral artery. The eyes and nose appear at the top. An aneurysm is a blood-filled swelling in an artery caused by a weakness in the arterial wall. Cerebral aneurysms often result from a congenital weakness in the artery and may persist for many years without causing symptoms. Rupture of the aneurysm causes a subarachnoid brain haemorrhage,a usually fatal condition in which blood leaks into the space between two of the membranes around the brain. Cerebral aneurysms are left untreated unless they cause symptoms,in which case surgery is usually recommended | |
