Mutated "ras" gene for bowel cancer. Autoradiogram (X-ray film) of human DNA showing a ras gene which has mutated, and which causes bowel cancer. The pattern of black bands represents the coded structure of the gene. A segment of the gene (arrowed) has mutated to the abnormal code "CAC". An abnormal protein is thus produced with amino acids 12 and 13 mutated. Mutated sequences of the ras gene cause 40-50% of human bowel cancers. This gene mutation was identified using a technique called ARMS (Amplification Refractory Mutation System). Researchers hope to screen for the ras gene to identify bowel cancer patients.
