Acne vulgaris. View of the back of a 18 year old man with the skin disorder acne vulgaris. Acne is a general term describing skin spots formed when sebaceous glands become overactive and inflamed. Acne vulgaris is the most common acne, occurring typically during adolescence. Pustules (large red spots) develop where hair follicles become blocked with sebum secreted by the sebaceous glands. Bacteria may multiply in the blockage, leading to inflammation and formation of "whiteheads",or milia. "Blackheads",or comedones, are formed when the sebaceous gland is blocked with a plug. Most cases clear up after adolescence | |
