Alexander Wilson (1766-1813),American-Scottish naturalist. Wilson born in Scotland,was an apprentice weaver with an interest in poetry. His love of poetry resulted in a life of poverty and coupled with the political climate of unrest this resulted in problems with the law. He escaped to America in 1794 to become a teacher. Here he meet William Bartram and gained an interest in birds. In 1808 he published the first of a nine-volume work,American Ornithology,which illustrated 268 species including 26 previously unidentified birds.
