Portrait of James Nasmyth (1808-90),Scottish engineer. Nasmyth was the son of a landscape painter in Edinburgh. Although his formal schooling finished when he was 12,Nasmyth watched local engineers at work to understand their processes. After making his own brass foundry,Nasmyth obtained a post in London with Maudslay. Nasmyth began to design machine tools, and was fascinated with steam engines. When approached by an engineer from the Great Western Railway for advice in making a shaft for the SS Great Britain,Nasmyth designed the first steam hammer. A few years later he patented it and made his fortune. He retired at 48 to become an astronomer | |
