William Harvey,English physician, born April 1st 1578 and died in London on 3rd June 1657. Harvey is considered the founder of modern physiology for his work on the circulation of the blood. Until his research, popular belief followed the Greek physician Galen's views, which stated that blood oscillated back and forth in the vessels. Harvey was an experimenter. He discovered that the heart was a muscle & that it worked by contracting, pushing blood out. Through dissection he saw that the valves separating the heart into two upper & lower chambers permitted only a one way flow of blood & that it circulated in a closed curve | |
